2 Easy Recipes for Jalapeno Havarti Cheese

0
0

Havarti is a semi-soft cheese that has a mild yet slighty nutty taste. This cheese, originally made in Denmark, is a common addition to cheese platters, sandwiches, fondues and sauces. It’s also available in a variety of styles as flavors like dill, caraway and even jalapeno. The jalapeno variety of havarti has just enough kick to spice up for favorite panini, salad or entree without overpowering it.

Here are two ways to try this tasty variety of havarti.

Havarti Macaroni and Cheese

Mac and cheese recipes are so wonderful because they’re easy to adapt. You can use nearly any type of cheese — or a blend — from havarti to cheddar, gouda and mozzarella. You can try this recipe with regular havarti cheese but the jalapeno adds a grown-up flavor to a meal that’s usually a favorite for kids.

Ingredients

3 cup pasta, uncooked

2 tablespoons butter

2 tablespoons flour

1/4 teaspoon each salt and pepper

1-1/2 cup milk

6 ounces shredded mild cheddar

4 ounces shredded jalapeno havarti

1/2 cup plain breadcrumbs

2 tablespoons butter, melted

Directions

1. Preheat oven to 350 degrees F. Cook pasta according to package directions.

2. Meanwhile, prepare a baking dish with cooking spray or butter.

3. In a double boiler over gently simmering water, melt the two tablespoons of butter. Stir in flour, milk, salt and pepper. Stirring constantly, cook until sauce slightly thickens. Add both cheeses and continue cooking until melted.

4. Drain pasta and layer in baking dish. Pour the cheese sauce over the pasta and stir gently.

5. Melt remaining butter and mix with breadcrumbs. Spoon over pasta in dish.

6. Bake for 20 minutes, or until golden brown and bubbly.

Chicken Stuffed with Jalapeno Havarti

This cheese recipe requires only four ingredients. The spice is enough to satisfy the adult palate without turning away the kids, too.

Ingredients

Two boneless, skinless chicken breasts

1 teaspoon chili powder

1 package of Dofino Havarti with Jalapeno, sliced

Salt and pepper, to taste

Directions

1. Preheat oven to 375 degrees F. Create a pocket in the chicken breasts by slicing into the side without going all the way through. Lay the chicken open.

2. Cover the chicken with saran wrap and pound it with a mallet until flat. You can also use the edge of a plate for this. Remove the wrap and sprinkle with chili powder. Add a single slice of havarti to each side.

3. Fold chicken closed and secure with toothpicks. Season with salt and pepper and bake in a baking dish, covered with aluminum foil, for about 30 minutes.

Paper Towels – Effect on the Environment

0
0

Paper towels seem like a brilliant invention. What’s more convenient than disposable towels that you don’t have to clean or use again? Just buy new ones and throw the old one away. What we may not think about when using paper towels are the extreme waste that they create, and what their effects on the environment truly are.

Paper towels were first invented as a way for medical facilities to prevent the spread of germs. In the beginning, these disposable products weren’t as popular as they are today, but that changed fast. Paper towels soon were used in households all over America, and the waste started piling up.

The Effects of Paper Towels

Paper towels, like any paper product, are made from trees. That means every time you use a disposable towel, you’re using the inside of a tree to wipe down your counters and surfaces. In your lifetime, you’ll probably use thousands and thousands of rolls, which will is the equivalent of an entire forest. Imagine a local forest that you’ve walked through being completely cut down just for paper towels!

It’s Not Just Trees That Are Being Consumed for Paper Towels

Paper towels use a whole lot more resources than just trees. First, the trees have to be grown to make the product. These might be grown on a farm, or more likely, they’re just cut down. This requires heavy machinery which uses fuel, and man power to get the job done. Those trees must then be transported to a facility to be cleaned and processed. The process will use more resources like oil, and especially water.

Next, the product will be transported to a packaging facility. From there, they will make their way to a warehouse to be distributed, then to the grocery store, then to your home. Imagine the amount of fuel used to transport these trees! This means the less disposable towels and paper products you use, the less trees will be cut down.

Paper Towels in Landfills

Landfills are filled with disposable paper products like diapers, napkins, printer paper, notebooks, tissues, and paper towels. There is no way to recycle or reuse disposable many disposable paper products like sanitary napkins and diapers (not to mention it isn’t sanitary!). What happens to these paper products? Eventually, paper products biodegrade. The amount of time that paper towels take to biodegrade varies, but typically it is about one year. The thicker the towel, the longer it will take to break down into the environment. Perhaps the biggest problem is that the paper isn’t the only thing in paper products, and also that we are using paper towels faster than they can biodegrade into the environment. We’re using our resources faster than we can replace them, and the waste is piling up even faster.

Chemicals in Paper Towels

Paper towels aren’t exactly just trees. To increase absorbency, they’ve been subjected to dioxins and other ingredients (the process isn’t disclosed on the roll of paper towels). They are also bleached to give them their white color. The dangers of chlorine bleach have been well documented. Infants and toddlers are especially vulnerable to the effects of chlorine bleach. To reduce their exposure to these chemicals, limit the use of paper plate and towel usage. Instead, use regular plates, cloth napkins, and products that can be washed and reused.

Why We Need Trees

Trees give us oxygen, and filter our air. Since the Industrial Age, the world has been producing emissions that have been polluting our atmosphere. Trees are one of our only hopes to help clean the air, and we’re cutting them down much faster than we can keep up with replacing them. Trees also help to filter ground soil and water, and provide much needed shade for our homes. Wildlife also depend on trees for their existence. Overuse of trees will result in the extinction of some species, will trickle up to the human species in one way or another. As we face the unwelcome prospect of climate change, it’s essential that we keep as many trees as we can to help reduce emissions and to filter the air that we breathe. The United States is the biggest user of disposable paper products, using 50% more than Europe and 500% more than Latin America. Despite the awareness of disposable paper product consumption, consumption continues to increase, which makes it even more important to spread the word about going reusable.

Packaging Waste

Like most every other product created today, disposable products are wrapped in an outer shell of plastic, increasing their overall wastefulness. The outer wrapper has no use other than to contain the product. After opening the product, it’s thrown away. It cannot be recycled. These thin plastics take thousands of years to photodegrade into the environment. Unlike biodegradable items, this means it will never truly disappear, just become smaller and smaller, and eventually work its way into our waterways and drinking water.

How to Decrease Consumption

To decrease your use of paper towels, try using a reusable towel instead. Wring out the towel and rinse it off as needed, washing the cloth in the washing machine when necessary. You’ll be amazed at how fewer times you’ll be taking out your trash simply by going reusable. It’s a great feeling to have a lighter trash load! If you live in a town that charges per bag of trash, that’s another potential savings for you. For apartment complexes and condos, this could mean stable fees and rents due to the stability of the cost of dumpsters and dumper rentals. In other words, the savings could pass to you.

The Cost Savings of Going Reusable

Going reusable isn’t just great for the environment, it’s great for your wallet. The cost savings quickly add up. The average cost of a package of paper towels is well over $1 per roll. A typical family probably uses a couple of rolls per week, maybe 3-5 even. This can really add up! That’s around $3-5 per week, and many trees per week, too. It’s hard to justify cutting down a few trees per week just to wipe down your counters, isn’t it? By going reusable, you’ll immediately realize the cost savings. As opposed to the disposable variety, reusables can be used again and again. The other benefit of going reusable is that you won’t have to lug around the towels in the grocery store. They take up a lot of room in the grocery cart and the store! Reusables take up a fraction of the space and can be stored right underneath your kitchen sink.

Above Ground Pools – Repair All Metal Side Wall Problems

0
0

This page will explain to you all kinds of steel side wall repairs, here are just a few: side wall rusted around the skimmer or return jet, rusted to the point of rupture, and actual rupture of wall.

OK, let’s get started, we’ll start with the most common of all side wall problems and that will be rusted around the skimmer and return jet. First thing to do is drain the pool to about six inches below the skimmer or return jet, while the pool is being drained, take off the top rails above and on both sides of the skimmer, you might have to take two sections off on either side of the skimmer or return jet. Once that is done, take off the coping (plastic piece holding the liner in place). By this time the pool should be drained enough to take the skimmer or return jet off the side wall. (All references to the skimmer, return jet and holes in the side wall, will be referred to as skimmer)

Now, that’s all done, gently pull the liner up and over the side wall and expose the rusted or damaged skimmer hole. Next you determine how much you have to cut out to get rid of the rust, example, let’s say you determine that you are going to need to cut a hole 12 X 12 inches then you will need a piece of galvanized metal 24 X 24 inches to cover the 12 X 12 hole. The galvanized metal should be at least the same thickness or the next size up. If your not sure take a piece of the wall you cut out, for sizing.

OK! You got the galvanized metal and your ready to put it in place so all you have to do is cut the hole for the skimmer, you can use the skimmer as a template to cut the hole. Your next step is to position the replacement piece so that your skimmer hole is level, the easiest way to do this is measure from the top of the side wall to the replacement on both sides the measurement should be the same. Then use some duct tape to hold it in place. A little trick to keep all those metal filings from going between the wall and liner is to put an earth magnet on the drill bit while drilling and use a medium speed on your drill and the magnet will not fall off. Once in place you can get your drill and rivets ready, the size of rivets you should use is anything from 3/16 to 1/4 inch, get a big box because you will be spacing them 1 inch apart.

Let’s get on with the drilling layout, with a tape measure make a line 1 inch in from all edges and a second line 3 inches in, now on the one inch line put a hole in each of the corners, next from each corner hole you measure 1 inch both horizontally and vertically. Now from here we measure three inches from each corner hole and drill another hole, but before we drill anymore holes we want to put in a couple rivets to hold the replacement in place solidly. As you noticed the holes are two inches apart continue from each corner until you reach the center.

Now for the three inch line we put a hole in the corner and one hole in each direction two inches from the corner hole if you have done it right it should be in between two rivets on the one inch line so that all the rivets are staggered. Once you have all the rivets in place you can drill the holes for the skimmer. The final step is to duct tape all the metal edges so their is nothing sharp to pierce the liner when put back in place. Now all that is left to do, is to put everything back together the way it came apart.

This concludes the instruction for repairing the rust around the pool skimmer and the return jet and any hole in the side wall, for instruction on how to replace a whole section please read on.

Heaven forbid, you actually have had a blow out, if your liner got ruined then it is an easy task to take it out and repair the section before putting in a new liner, if you were lucky and your liner just got stretched a bit then things get a bit trickier. If you were really lucky you probably noticed a soft spot in the wall and checked it out and realized it was going to need repair soon. If any of these scenarios fits your problem then the remedy is at hand. Read on.

First, you will have to take about half the pools top rails off. Of course if you are replacing the liner than they all have to come off. Next remove the coping and lift the liner over the side wall. Now depending on the size of the hole, you will need an extra two feet of galvanized metal the same size in height as the existing metal. Cut out the rusted piece and put in your new piece. Now from the end of the new sheet of metal measure in three inches and score a line from top to bottom on both ends, and a similar line nine inches in from the ends.

Also, make sure your lines don’t line up with one of your upright supports, if they do slide your panel one way or the other so that they don’t line up, OK, starting from the top measure down one inch on the three inch line and two inches down on the nine inch line and mark a drill hole, and you continue on both lines two inches apart till you reach the bottom. Drill three or four holes, then put in some rivets from the inside out, you want the flat part on the inside of the pool, and then continue drilling. When you have finished with the rivets put some duct tape on them and on the edge of the metal and put your Pool back together again. I hope these instructions helped you get more years of pleasure out of your pool.

Making Your Ex Want You Back – The 4 Stages

0
0

Breakups are hard, especially if you’ve been dumped. But one thing you might not realize is that your ex boyfriend or girlfriend is going through almost exactly the same types of feelings you currently are. Emotional bonds don’t dissolve overnight, and feelings take time to fade away. By using this to your advantage, you can get your ex to want you back even when circumstances might seem borderline hopeless.

There are four main phases a person goes through when a relationship ends. You already know how you feel, so it’s time to examine how your ex feels in order to determine your best approach toward getting them back.

Stage 1 – Detachment

Remember when your ex sat you down to break up with you? Although this may have been a shock to you, your ex spent a lot of time making this decision days or even weeks beforehand. He or she knew what was coming, and unlike you, they were already prepared for it. In short, your ex boyfriend or girlfriend began detaching themselves from your relationship way before you had the chance to do the same.

This gave your ex an emotional advantage while dealing with you during the breakup. Your ex knew what you would say, how you would react, and what types of protest you might offer to keep them around. Your boyfriend or girlfriend was prepared to counter your every move or plea, and they had an escape route planned. They’d detached long before you did, and this immediately put you in a position of weakness.

So what can you do during the detachment stage that will help get your ex back? Essentially, you need to emotionally distance yourself as well. The quicker you can accept the breakup rather than fight it – the faster you can agree with your ex’s decision to end things – the easier it will be to move onto the next stage of reconciliation. Many people get stuck here because they refuse to detach, and they think that by clinging onto the relationship as tightly as possible they can keep their boyfriend or girlfriend from breaking up with them. Not so.

Stage 2 – Avoidance

Is your ex boyfriend or girlfriend ignoring you? Don’t take this as a sign of disinterest. It’s very common for an ex to go out of their way to steer clear of seeing or hearing from you, especially if they were the one who initiated the breakup. Your ex probably feels weird or awkward around you right now, and doesn’t know how to handle contact of any kind.

The avoidance stage is definitely not the time to press onward. You can’t force your ex to see you, and you can’t guilt them into wanting to talk to you again. No matter how badly you might want to see your ex boyfriend or ex girlfriend right now, you need such a reunion to happen under your own terms. Setting up such an encounter before your ex is ready to see you will only lead to further avoidance and resentment.

Stage 3 – Longing

After being apart for a while, your ex will start thinking about you again. This is a natural reaction to being away from someone they shared such an intimate connection with, and both you and your ex will feel a certain desire to be together again – even temporarily.

Getting your ex to want you back is all about making them miss you. You need your ex to think about your past relationship, and ideally this needs to happen of their own accord. As time goes on your ex will tend to remember the good times you shared together, and the cool things you did as a couple. These are the memories that will put your relationship back together, and eventually get your ex to see a future with you again.

The worst thing you can do during this stage of the breakup is try to “be there” for your ex. Sticking around and being friendly with an ex boyfriend or girlfriend is only going to reduce their desire to see you. It’s always better to stay far removed from your ex’s current situation, as this will create a void in their life where you used to be. If you’re always in plain sight, your ex never gets the chance to miss you.

Stage 4 – Regret

Left unchecked, your ex boyfriend or girlfriend will eventually reach a point where they regret being without you. These might be temporary feelings, brought about on a lonely night or a moment of weakness… or they might be a lot more substantial. There are certain signs and signals given off when your ex is reconsidering a relationship with you again, and for the best chance at reconciliation you need to know what these are.

Regret might be fleeting, but it’s something you can help build on. By giving your ex a reason to want to be with you again, you can enhance their need and desire to see you. There are certain adjustments you can make that will get your ex boyfriend or girlfriend interested in you again, even if it seems they’ve already moved on. Learning these adjustments can mean the difference between getting your ex back or losing them for good.

What Made Your Wife Cheat? 5 Mistakes Men Make

0
0

When a wife cheats on her husband and he forgives her, the next logical step is to understand what went wrong so it can be fixed. If you’re trying to learn how you pushed your wife away, you’re on the right page.

You’re Not Friends

People meet, they fall in love and get married before they get to know each other. Never forget, courtship and marriage are two very different ballgames. Once they settle in and get used to each other, many couples realize they have nothing in common to share. Good friends make good couples.

Learn to share activities, conversations and everything life throws at you, as friends. Don’t forget that extramarital affairs often start out as harmless friendships. Be your wifes’ best friend and she will never turn to someone else.

You Stopped Being Romantic

Once men bag the prize, they give up the chase. After marriage, the courtship ends, reality and work begins. The sudden hugs and kisses fizzle out, dates, flowers and compliments trickle down too.

You must understand, every woman is excited by such gestures. To compensate for your lack of interest or detachment from her, she may have an affair to feel desirable again.

You Don’t Share

Some call it cribbing, others nagging. When women worry, they vent their feelings by talking to their hubby, friend, mum or even a diary to relieve stress. Similarly, when men are worried, they look for immediate solutions, they delve deeper into the topic, compounding stress.

You may have legit reasons for being preoccupied with seeking solutions, but unless you tell your wife and keep her involved, she won’t understand your problems. Worse – she may mistake your preoccupation with detachment and assume the two of you are drifting apart. So share, tell her what’s bothering you.

You Hurt Her

Don’t take it personally but men can be ridiculously insensitive to womens’ feelings. Unfortunately, women can be overly sensitive. Maybe your lack of interest in her daily life and work bugs her. Perhaps you are over-critical about her habits or inattentive about her activities.

While it isn’t possible to walk on egg-shells all the time, it’s possible to be more considerate and more involved as a husband. Try being a better listener and genuinely appreciating the things she enjoys.

You Let Sex Become A Chore

This one’s self-explanatory. Sooner or later you stop going down on her, she starts getting head-aches, until you suddenly realize you have sex once a week. Then once a month. And always in missionary position! Sex is THE most intimate aspect of every marriage.

Time together is meant to enrich your sexual routine, not inhibit it. Talk to her about what she wants. The more you know her, the better you please her. That’s the beauty of being one womans’ slave for life. And the best thing is – if you’re doing this right, no way will she stray.

Introduction to Ball Weights

0
0

Why Use Ball Weights

The purpose of the scrotum is to keep sperm at their best, which is done by keeping the testicles at a lower temperature than the body. The muscles in the groin area allow the testicles to hang down which will help cool down the body. Not only is there a medical reason for the scrotum to hang down, but it is also pleasing for the male. He can feel the sensation, which is very nice therefore stretching the scrotum, will allow the sensation to stay for a longer period of time. Some men even prefer the look of their scrotum stretched.

Many use ball weights as they not only stretch the scrotum but also many have reported the penis has grown in both girth and length for using ball weights.

Methods of Stretching

The best way of course is to use ball weights. The weights should fit properly which means it should be comfortable without slipping off. In order to do this, you must use ball weights that have the largest diameter but will not easily slip off. The collar of the weights should fit accurately or you will not achieve any success.

Sizes of Ball Weights

Most ball weights are offered in different sizes which includes 10mm, 14mm, 28mm, 42mm, 45mm, 56mm, 60mm, and 90mm. Some weights come in pairs and are attached above the testicles. Of course, these are only examples of sizes; you can find several different types of ball weights all offering various sizes.

Time It Takes to Stretch the Scrotum

Some have reported their scrotum has stretched after only a few weeks with noticeable improvement when the body is hot and the scrotum is dangling a tad bit lower. On the other hand, most report improvement after around six months of stretching.

Types of Ball Weights

The two-piece weight created from surgical steel offers an external diameter of 62mm along with the sizes mentioned above.

The two piece round 2-piece created from surgical steel offers a set screw that can be adjusted using the Allen key that is provided. The sizes include 10mm thick bar x 35mm inside, 10mm thick bar x 40mm inside, 15mm thick bar x 30mm inside, 15mm thick bar x 32mm inside, 15mm thick bar x 34 inside, 15mm thick bar x 36mm inside, and 15mm thick bar x 39 inside.

The 35mm leather weight is soft and warm instead of using a hard metal. The weight offers a snap so the size can be just a bit different from 1 ¼ to 1 ½ inside.

The Leather ball stretching kit is perfect for the beginner. The ball weights included are 1 inch, 1 1/2 inch, 2 Inches, 2 1/2 Inches, 3 Inches, and 4 Inches. These offer a buckle on every ball weight to add more weight.

The large heavy weight is for those that have been stretching for awhile. The weight can be attached to either a surgical steel or leather ball weight to add more weight. It is available in two sizes, which are 10.5 and 17.5 ounces.

The penis split is not actually a weight at all as you place everything through the split. It does work to stretch the scrotum, though. The gadget is made from surgical steel with an opening for the balls of 2 1/8″ x 1 3/8′ and the opening for the penis of 1 3/8 inches.

The penis roller is not a weight either but does serve the same purpose. It will help strengthen and enhance the penis while adding a few inches to the girth and length of the penis for a short amount of time. Most men have reported harder erections and better sensations.

Fencing Training Goals and Periodization

The fencing season in most US Fencing Divisions poses significant problems in the periodization of training for competitive fencers. Fencing is now a year-round sport, with competitions in all months, and in some cases opportunities for fencers to fence in a meet within driving distance every weekend. In this environment, planning a periodized training program requires close agreement between the goals of the individual fencer, the desire to win, and the overall structure of a club or salle training program.

Classic periodization creates four levels of training cycles:

  1. Super macrocycles – multi-year cycles to prepare for events that happen less frequently than a year; the Olympic quadrennium is an example.
  2. Macrocycles – a single training cycle that covers a year (in some cases two macrocycles may be appropriate).
  3. Mesocycles – a number of training cycles, as many as 6, within a macrocycle.
  4. Microcycles – the weekly training cycle.

The structure of training cycles is logically tied to the key competitive events in a fencing year. What those key competitive events are depends on the level and goals of the fencer. For an elite athlete working to make a national team, each of the events in the selection process is a key event. In this athlete’s program the typical Division A2 event is inconsequential, and is only valuable to the degree that it serves as training event. The real events vary with weapon and age group, but include North American Cup circuit events, Summer Nationals, and selected World Cup and Grand Prix events. For a senior foil fencer this is a minimum of seven events that award points for the national points list, culminating in the World Championships, the event in which the fencer should have the strongest performance. For the handful of very best elite fencers, this is a single macrocycle, with individual mesocycles for each targeted event.

For most fencers, however, just qualifying for the Junior Olympics or the Summer Nationals is a difficult task, much less succeeding in the event. For a cadet fencer this might be two macrocycles with the Junior Olympics as one and the Summer Nationals as the second. But these macrocycles each require performance in a qualifying event that is maximal for the average fencer, driving at least two mesocycles. The challenge is to identify, from the wide range of available tournaments, events within the macrocycle that will serve as important preparations for both the qualifiers and the national events, and that can serve as targets in mesocycles.

This is further complicated by the need to achieve the appropriate classification to qualify for the desired event. For example, I coached a Canadian fencer resident in the United States whose goal was to be able to fence in a Division 1 event. She earned her C classification in a Division 3 event, but did so too late to be able to enter a Division 1 cup circuit tournament (a C being the minimum classification for entry) before she returned to Canada.

What does this mean for the coach who uses periodized training? First, the coach and the fencer must have well understood and mutually agreed upon goals, and those goals must be long-term, strategic goals, supported by seasonal goals. The goals drive the overall design of the training program.

Second, the coach and fencer must pick events that logically contribute to meeting the objectives of the training program. Not every tournament deserves a maximal effort. Some tournaments should be skipped altogether or treated only as training events for the fencer to use to work on specific problems (given that understanding that medals or classifications are not the objective may be difficult for some athletes).

And third, enough time must be allowed between key tournaments for the training process to work. If a fencer trains 5 days a week and fences a weekend competition, it is possible to run a complete microcycle between competitions, including time for rest and recovery. However, if a fencer trains only one or two days a week, it is very difficult to vary the length, intensity, and composition of training sessions to achieve any significant progress. This is true even if one of the many alternate models of periodization is selected: conjugate, concurrent, skill/strength, or multi-pace.

All of this means that both the coach and the fencer must understand their goals and work together to find the best approach to training that meets the competitive goals within the reality of the club environment, the available time, and the fencer’s ability to train. Periodized training is a complex approach to training with a proven record of improving athlete performance. It is also a method that demands that both the coach and the athlete understand and be committed to its application.

Oklahoma City Apartments That Approve Regardless of Broken Lease, Bad Credit Or Criminal Background

Oklahoma City is one of the fastest growing towns in the state of Oklahoma. It is also the 13th most populous in the nation with over a half a million people. The metro area actually has upwards of a million. Because the city is an industrial and educational hub, there are many people who choose to make this their home each year meaning the city’s numerous apartment complexes are in high demand especially from single families entering the workforce for the first time or others who are saving to buy a home but want to stay in an apartment for the time being. Oklahoma City’s apartments also demand certain criteria before they can approve. One of these is good credit. The other is acceptable rental history. The applicant must also pass a background check and also not have any judgments such as bankruptcies. So are there any apartments in this city that approve regardless of one’s rental background, credit or judgments?

There are a few apartments in the city that can approve problem tenants. There is a general misconception that these apartments are in the Section 8 parts of the city but this is not necessarily true. One can actually secure a very decent apartment in a preferential area of the city even with a problematic past. Let us examine a few places:

  • Downtown
  • Bricktown
  • Deep Deuce
  • Midtown
  • Asian District

This is by no means an exhaustive list. The challenge becomes that many of these types of apartments, usually referred to as “second chance Oklahoma City apartments”, do not blatantly advertise. One is then left with the choice of searching for them by trial and error. Sometimes the Internet can be of great assistance. Another way to locate these apartments units is to ask an apartment locator and see whether they can assist with a list. Usually they will have a list while at other times they may only be able to cater to clients who have a spotless credit.

Another avenue you can explore is networking with friends. If you know friends or family members whose credit is not perfect but who have gone ahead and been approved for an apartment, you can get valuable information from them as far as the location and requirements.

It is also good to note that even though these apartments may be willing to work with applicants with less-than-perfect histories, they will insist on a few key requirements. One of them is having a job which pays at least three times the amount of the rent.

The Most Common Items Kept in Self Storage

Self storage is big business and it's an industry that's continuing to grow year-on-year. Having spotted the benefits of using this type of facility, people are now using it for both business and personal use. What are the most common items found in self storage though?

Furniture – sofas, beds, wardrobes, bookshelves, storage units, tables, desks and chairs are all very common items that you will find in self storage. Whether you're in the process of moving, have downgraded to a smaller promises or you're simply trying to de-clutter, getting rid of unnecessary bulky items is a great way to free up some space.

Electronics – companies in particular tend to put a lot of electronics into self storage because their business needs may vary at different times of the year. Say for example Christmas is a very busy time, they may need more staff and therefore more computers. During quitterer periods however, they may have less employees and therefore will not need as much desk space.

Files and documents – we all know how much space paperwork takes up both at home and in the office. Not only do we end up with boxes or shelves full of documents, it looks untidy, clutters the place up and it's also a fire hazard.

Putting paperwork into self storage is a great way to get around this problem because it's out of your way but you can still access it at any time and you know that it's being kept somewhere secure.

Rare or valuable items – many people like to collect antiques, art, rare or collectors' items. Naturally, these all make great investments but as they're incredibly valuable, it can be a bit of a concern keeping them in your home – especially at times when you're away.

Keeping these items locked away in self storage offers more security than you would be able to enjoy at home or in the office. With secure locks, CCTV and someone on the promises 24 hours a day, you can be rest assured that your marriages are incredibly well protected.

Cars – believe it or not, cars are often found in storage units. Some people do this because they have a vintage model that they do not use very often, others simply do not require their car regularly, students may need somewhere to keep things during term time or some people who do not have a garage prefer to keep their car somewhere secure while they're on holiday or away for extended periods of time.

Seasonal items – whether it's Halloween, Easter or Christmas, we all love to embrace the holiday seasons. Unfortunately, all the festive decorations can take up a lot of space and because they're often not cheap, few of us want to throw them away after just one use. If you're limited on space in your home, keeping seasonal items in self storage is the perfect way to free up some much needed space.

Tell Me About Yourself – Job Interview Answers

0
0

Have you been asked the job interview question, “Tell me about yourself?” It is a tried and true question or maybe a tired, but true question that many interviewers still ask. When an interviewer asks this question, it is typically one of the first questions asked. What is the interviewer really trying to find out? He wants to get an overall picture about you. Here is how you do not want to answer this interview question:

  • “Well, I was born in Kalamazoo”…NO…the interviewer does not want a biography.
  • “I am married with a baby boy, a dog named Rex, and a cat”…NO…way too personal and off subject of the job.”
  • “I am a hard worker”……NO….way too cliché and has no meaning.
  • “I am a people person”…NO…another worse cliché. A serial killer could say the same thing.

The best interview answer to the question, “Tell me about yourself,” is to talk about your successes in a way that tells the interviewer that you can fit their job needs. To give your best answer you must know what the job description is, and what the company is looking for. If your interviewer really does want to know about where you grew up, she will ask that specific question. This could lead to an illegal question, but that is a topic for another article. I pulled a job listing for an electrical engineer. I read the overall job description and the thirteen bullet points of the job description. The overall description is:

We are seeking to hire a corporate electrical engineer responsible for maintaining and improving the electrical systems for XYZ Energy’s existing facilities. The successful candidate will also be responsible for design guidance, review, and construction support for future facilities.

Then I reviewed the bullet points and chose one that was technical and one that involved people. Here are the two bullet points:

  • Lead investigations with site personnel to troubleshoot and resolve plant electrical system problems.
  • Work with site and construction personnel to develop and implement small capital projects to improve site electrical systems including providing electrical input for project proposal development.

There are many job requirements to this position. In this electrical engineer interview, you do not want to limit yourself to sounding like you have only one or two of skills, with the first interview answer you give. You do want to give actual results that you have accomplished. If you are known for finding problems others miss and you are someone who can get a team working together, then your answer to, “Tell me about yourself,” for the job listed above will be something similar to:

“I am an electrical engineer with eight years of working in a variety of situations. I am known to be able to find problems that others have missed, and then work with the on-site teams to quickly get the problems fixed, to improve the electrical systems and facilities. The last company I worked for had an issue and I saved an estimated $500,000 in equipment failures because I discovered the problem and we fixed it right away.”

You can see that the interview answer incorporated part of the overall description, as well as the bullet points listed. Be sure that you are always honest in an interview. Lying about your abilities or achievements will catch up with you. The bottom line for the answer to any interview question is to give an honest answer, and talk about your skills and results.

Book Review – Healthy Carb Cookbook For "Dummies," by Jan McCracken

I have been part of the low-carb community for several years, and I find it interesting to watch the trends and the ups and downs of low carb advocacy. I've always leaned towards a healthy version and moderation.

From the beginning, I preferred "real food" made healthy, and this delightful book, Healthy Carb Cookbook For 'Dummies' (Wiley Publishing, 2005), by Jan McCracken, offers a wonderful variety of down to earth and delicious, "real world "recipes.

This book is a realistic and humorous guide for living a healthy life for real people. It addresses ease of preparation, economy of effort, consideration of meal budgets, and most importantly abundance of flavor – all with health as the underlying factor. I love every recipe I've tried so far.

As any "Dummies" reader knows, there's more to a "Dummies" cookbook than recipes. And in this book, there are terrific, common sense, and again, realistic segments, from advice and tips to information on how to get the most benefit from living right in this fast-paced world. I also appreciate that the author obviously knows her chops, so to speak. She has done her research and provides information that I have not found readily available about low and healthy carb.

I've been researching and reading about all angles of low carb eating for several years, and this book actuallyave me some fresh information, new perspectives and a fun read. If you have any curiosity or interest in low or healthy carb cooking, I highly recommend getting a copy of this book.

VIN Number Decoding For Classic Muscle Cars

0

One of the best pieces of advice I was ever given in regards to buying a classic muscle car was to invest in high quality resource materials so I could crack the code on Vehicle Identification Numbers (VIN) to make sure that I was not getting scammed.

The best way to find a high quality book is to find what the experts are using. With the internet, you can type a subject like Camaro restoration book into the Amazon search box. You can also Google it and follow the links, which will take you to various forums and websites. Chevrolet by the Numbers, by Alvin Colvin, is the best book I have ever found for Chevrolet part numbers, Vehicle Identification Numbers (VIN), trim tags, and model ID. The book is an easy read, with chapters designated to the different components. Again, I used this process in my quest to purchase a rare Camaro. Just Google the car you are looking for and follow the links. The best resources will be obvious.

Here is a list of objects you will need when decoding your car.

Small flashlight, notebook, resource or reference book, mechanics mirror, pen or pencil, cordless or corded droplight, floor jack and jack-stands, coveralls, rags, brass wire brush, brake cleaner, yellow or white colored grease pencil, digital camera or camcorder.

If you are continuing to read this information, I can only surmise that buying a classic muscle car with the proper numbers and matching parts is important to you! Good! It should be! If this is true, I will walk you through an example of decoding a car. This will give you an idea of what it takes to properly decode a car.

Be prepared to take your time. I also discovered a sure fire way to determine who your true friends are. Ask them to go along to help you decode a car! Having an extra body can sometimes cut your time in half. I also recommend finding an expert or consultant on your car, and buying a couple of hours their time, especially if you are looking to purchase a special model classic car. It’s been my experience that an extra set of eyes can only help the cause. I found an expert through one of my reference books. Prior to me going to look at my current car, I spent about an hour talking with him, and making a list of things I should be looking for. (Of course, if you want someone to handle the process from A to Z, services are available. This is a great option if you are buying the car from remote.)

The Process

Before I arrived the owner told me the car was basically a roller project, meaning the engine and transmission were removed from the car. The engine, transmission and other components were placed in a pile where it would be easy to look at the numbers. The owner also claimed it was a limited edition Camaro, yet he didn’t have any paperwork like an original order invoice, or a protect o plate (a special metal plate shaped like a credit card that is used for warranty and repair services). This type of paperwork trail eliminates the need for further documentation. If you do not have this type of paperwork, then follow along. When I arrived at the location where the car was stored, the first thing I did was to check the VIN number. The VIN number is probably the most important number on a car. If you do not know how to decode a VIN on a particular Chevrolet, you will be unable to verify other components or numbers. What is nice about the book is it actually walks you through the whole decoding process, including providing the specific numbers location. As a sidebar, any good resource book on your particular make and model car will outline the way to decode your car, including number locations and decoding info. On 1968 and 1969 Camaros, the VIN number is located on the top of the dash board, on the drivers side. The number is visible through the windshield. I wiped the dirt and dust off of the VIN tag, and copied the numbers into my notebook.

VIN number

I was able to determine that my car was originally a V8, it was a 2 door sport coupe, made in 1969, assembled in Norwood Ohio, and it was the 662,8XXrd car built at that plant in that year.

Trim tag.

In 1969, all Camaro trim tags were located in the engine compartment, riveted on the upper left hand corner of the firewall. I took my rag and cleaned all of the dust and gunk off of the trim tag. Since the numbers were not that clear, I recleaned the trim tag, and removed the rest of the gunk. I used my flashlight to illuminate the numbers, and then copied the numbers into my notebook. Some of the trim tag numbers matched up with the VIN tag numbers, which was a good sign. The remaining numbers indicated that my car body was number 353,XXX to come down this plant’s assembly line. The interior was originally a standard black interior, and the car was built in the first week of June, 1969. The car was originally painted dusk blue and it was equipped with a spoiler package and a chrome trim package. So far everything was lining up. The reason for all of this detail is to illustrate how you can confirm that what you think you are buying is exactly what you are getting.

Before I move on, I want to share how this is relevant. A husband and wife from my car club went to look at a Chevelle. The car was advertised as a Super Sport. During the inspection process, and referencing the above book, they uncovered a number of inconsistencies. According to the numbers, the car had originally started out as a plain Jane 6 cylinder car. The car was now painted a different color, had a different color interior and a different engine. You get the picture. Over the years, one (or more) of the previous owners modified the car and tried to make it into a Super Sport. The point is it may have not been done maliciously, but the car still did not start out as a true Super Sport. And having the Super Sport option obviously raises the value of the car.

Engine code identification.

The engine is stamped in (2) places on a 69 Camaro. One is on the right front engine pad. The other location is on the rough casting portion on the rear of the engine, just above the oil filter. Again I wiped off the areas I just described with brake cleaner sprayed on a rag. You need to have a clean surface, and normally brake cleaner will do the trick. The front engine pad numbers appeared to have been restamped at one time, maybe after the engine block was decked (Decking in a machine process to check the flatness of the block deck for irregularities that cause compression and water leaks.) The tricky part is reading the numbers on the area above the oil filter. I recommend a really bright light and a magnifying glass. If that doesn’t do it, then I suggest taking a little muriatic acid an applying it to the numbers. This should make the numbers readable. The reason this number is sometimes hard to decipher is because these engines were hand stamped, and punched onto a rough surface. According to the numbers, I determined the engine was a 425 horsepower high performance engine, with a 4 speed manual transmission. The last numbers also corresponded with the last numbers in my VIN, which meant this was the original engine to this car. The numbers told me the engine was assembled June 14, which fell in line with the build date. The engine block part number that is cast into the rear of the block was cleaned with a rag and brake cleaner as well. The block part number indicated ahigh performance block used for Camaros. Another piece of the puzzle confirmed.

Rear axle identification.

The numbers on a Camaro rear axle are stamped on the top of the right axle tube. My experience has been that this area is normally pretty crusty and rusty. And this rear axle was no exception. After considerable wire brushing, I wiped the area clean with brake cleaner. Laying on my back, I shone the light on the area, while holding a mirror. It still wasn’t clear enough for me to read accurately. I then took my grease pencil, and ran it over the numbers. The purpose of the grease pencil is to provide contrast with the metal of the axle tube. When I put the mirror back over the area, I was rewarded with a very sharp image of the part numbers, which I copied into my notebook. According to the numbers, this rear axle assembly had a 4.10:1 gear ratio, limited slip. The axle was assembled June 16, 1969. Are you seeing a pattern starting to appear here? The axle numbers also indicated the axle to be original to the car based on the dates codes referencing June 1969 build date. I took the same approach with the other parts.

Here are my findings. The cylinder heads, intake manifold, carburetor, and transmission were the correct part numbers for the car. However none of these parts were date coded to the car. One of the heads was manufactured in April 1968, the other head was manufactured in February of 1969. The transmission was manufactured Jan 24th 1969. The reason I know all of these parts are not correctly date coded to the car is I decoded each one, by researching the part numbers, and date codes. All of this information is important, because not only did it verify what the owner had told me, and it also showed that the other parts were in line with the build date. Thereby providing further confirmation of what I was looking at. During my investigating, I took pictures with a digital camera of all of the parts and part numbers, as best as i could. I spent about 30 minutes walking around the car with a video camera and editorializing what I was taking footage of. I also took the list of things the Camaro expert had told me about and checked them off one by one. Later in the week I called the Camaro expert and shared my findings. I reviewed all of my research, including going over the individual part numbers, and the “things to look for” checklist. By the end of the phone call, I was 99 percent positive that this Camaro was what it was being advertised as.

The last thing I did was to have the car documented and certified by a Certified Camaro appraiser.

GM also stamped hidden VIN numbers in (2) different places on the car. The reason for the hidden VIN numbers was to add another step in preventing and identifying a stolen car. Because it is fairly easy to remove and swap out the VIN tag on the dash, the hidden VIN’s provided a back-up system of check and balances. For example, someone could possibly swap out a VIN tag, but if they didn’t know about the Hidden VIN numbers, a person in the know could easily identify the numbers not matching up. Because the car was bought a roller project, it was easy to check these hidden VIN’s, against the VIN tag on the dash. I wanted the appraiser to check them personally, and he confirmed the numbers as matching and authentic. In other words the certificate authenticates the car. Many appraisers will also supply you with a report on their findings. The nice thing about having a car certified is this type of paperwork is normally viewed as iron clad documentation. It normally raises the value of the car, because of the authenticity certificate. And if you ever go to sell the car, now you have documentation to provide the seller that the car is a real (Super Sport, Rally Sport, Z/28, etc. You fill in the blank)

Some people may wonder why would anyone go through all of this work.

However, keep in mind that many of these muscle cars are 20 plus years old and have gone through numerous owners and modifications. All of that history is prior to it being restored back to showroom original condition. In other words, many parts are bolt on and interchangeable from other models and different years. So just because the parts look ok, doesn’t mean that they even belong on the car. In the above example about the couple and the Chevelle, the car was priced as a Super Sport, yet the trim tag and other numbers reflected a totally different story. Even though the car was beautifully restored, it was really nothing more than a modified 6 cylinder, base model Chevelle that someone converted over to a V-8 at some time in it’s life. Don’t get me wrong, there is nothing wrong with modifying a car to an individual owners taste. The issue is when the car is sold and the seller forgets to mention (consciously or unconsciously) and inform the new owner of the modifications. Our Chevelle couple would have gladly paid the asking price if the car was a true Super Sport. But, because they knew how to decode the car, they were able to save themselves a lot of time, money and aggravation. At the time the difference between a plain Jane Chevelle and a real Super Sport was over $10,000. Just to throw some numbers out there, let’s be conservative and say it takes 6 hours of research to decode a car. Using our $10,000 figure, that equates to approximately $1,600 an hour. Not a bad return on your time investment. As muscle and classic cars have become more popular, I have seen many cases where just for the fun of it, an owner will start to do research on a car he or she owns.

Discovering your car isn’t really what you thought you purchased can really knock the wind out of you. By investing a small amount of money, and time, in researching and decoding your prospective muscle car purchase you can sleep at night knowing that you received the value you paid for. Anyone else interested in investing a couple of hours for peace of mind when purchasing a classic or muscle car???

The Technical Environment of the Stop Hit

The simple stop hit is probably the most frequently used of fencing’s counteroffensive actions. At the most basic level it simply tries to beat the opponent’s attack in speed or timing. However, successful employment of the stop hit depends on recognition of its unique characteristics and the environment in which it operates.

The stop hit is an attack into an opponent’s attack, stopping that attack from changing the relative score by meeting specific requirements in the fencing rules. In foil and sabre, it is delivered to hit before the attack, scoring a single touch for the fencer who is attacked. In epee it is delivered either to score before the original attack or to score simultaneously to preserve the relative difference in the fencers’ scores. As a practical matter, it is always a simple attack, most often a straight thrust.

Right of Way. Right of way is most influential in foil, as the stop must land before the initiation of the final movement of an attack. This is difficult to achieve, and requires the ability to identify the subtle signs of a developing compound attack so that the stop can arrive during the first action. The opponent can defeat the stop by accelerating the first movement into a simple attack. Right of way still applies at sabre, but the advanced target and the lockout time make the stop a more practical option. Right of way is not a factor in stop hits in epee (as right of way does not apply to epee bouts).

Target. Foil has the most restrictive target, the torso. Both sabre and epee have an advanced target, the arm, which the combination of distance to travel and lockout time makes both vulnerable and a useful stop target.

Distance to Travel. In sabre and epee the advanced target reduces the distance the stop hit has to travel. This means that the stop launched at the same speed against a sabre or epee arm target will hit significantly earlier than a stop hit against the torso in foil.

Lockout Times. Lock out time is the length of time between two hits after which the second hit will not register on the scoring apparatus. The foil lockout time is so long (300 milliseconds) as to not factor in blocking hits. However, in sabre the 120 millisecond lockout means that a cut to the advanced target combined with a rapid retreat has a real chance of timing out the original attack, resulting in a single light. In epee, the 40 millisecond (1/25th of second) lockout makes the epee stop hit a reliable action to either completely defeat the attack or to result in a double hit (when double hits are tactically desirable).

Double Hits. The character of double hits is a critical determining technical factor in stop hit employment. In foil and sabre the double hit (both red and green lights displayed by the scoring machine) requires the application of right of way to determine which hit scores. Only one of the two hits can be awarded the touch. This is a critical limitation for the stop hit in these two weapons because it means that the stop hit is subject to referee interpretation. In epee the stop that beats the attack by 40 milliseconds scores for the counteroffensive fencer; if the stop lands within the 40 millisecond window both fencers are hit, preserving the relative score between them. The ability to beat the attack by 40 milliseconds gives the stop hit exceptional utility as counter offense. Under any conditions, the stop thrust now can hit at any time up to 40 milliseconds after the attack, and still frustrate the attacker’s objective.

In summary, the stop thrust is technically the most difficult in foil, and therefore requires the best tactical preparation. In sabre the stop thrust or cut has the very real chance to time out the attacking action, especially when delivered to the advanced target. And in epee the stop thrust is potentially the most tactically useful because of the much wider time window in which it can be effective. This suggests that coaches should design their lessons to teach how best to exploit the specific technical requirements for the stop in the individual weapon.
